A utility sign near the ditch has been turned backward, exposing the rusted frame instead of the warning text. Your headlights sweep over the pines and catch the tower for only a second: black iron, red beacon, no cabin light. Whoever closed this road wanted people to stop here and go no farther. The question is whether they were trying to keep you out or keep something in.
